Fishing Report Cedar Bluff Reservoir Kansas - 2011-07-02 #9

Date I Fished:
07/02/2011
Report:

Crappie - Slow
Vertically fishing minnows, small slab spoons, or jigs over steep drops and around the fish attractors is the best bet right now. Anglers have reported catching a few fish of various size around the fish attractors on minnows and jigs, but overall the bite has been slow this past week.

Walleye - Slow/Fair
Fish can still be caught over points and along steep drop-offs drifting jigs tipped with nightcrawler or other various bottom presentations, but most fish have been running on the small side. Fish have begun to transition to a summer pattern making the early morning and late evening times the best. Fish should be moving deeper during the day where they can be caught vertically fishing slab spoons or drifting live bait over points or drops in roughly 25 feet of water.

White Bass - Fair/Good
White bass have begun chasing shad on the surface, but anglers have reported that most of the fish caught have been small. As the gizzard shad grow, larger whites should start surfacing. Otherwise, whites can be caught trolling crankbaits, drifting minnows, or vertically fishing slab spoons over points and breaks.

Wipers - Fair
Larger wipers have moved to deeper water and anglers are beginning to catch them drifting live shad, sunfish, minnows or vertically fishing with 1 oz. and larger slab spoons along drop-offs or over humps in 20 to 25 feet of water. Anglers have recently reported catching fish up to 7 lbs.

The 2009 yearclass of wipers are showing up mixed in with schools of white bass and are approximately 12 to 14 inches in length so they can be confused with the larger white bass. Wipers tend to be more streamlined and have more distinct horizontal black stripes than do white bass. Wipers also have 2 tooth patches versus the single tooth patch of the white bass on the "tongue". From the fish I have observed the toothpatches have been fairly easy to discern thus should be a pretty good characteristic to use to distiguish the two species. Remember the creel limit for wipers is 2/day.
