DELAWARE BAY The arrival of big rockfish in the bay was confirmed on Monday when four were weighed at Lewes Harbour Marina. The fish ranged in weight from 28 to 32 pounds and were caught on trolled Stretch 25s. On Wednesday two more big rock to 46 pounds were checked in at the same site. They too were caught at the mouth of the bay on Stretch 25s.
Further up the bay, chunkers using menhaden have had some success near Ship John and Miah Maull. The fishing here will only improve and can be counted on to produce rockfish topping the 40-pound mark.
Tog fishermen have had success on lower bay reef sites, the Outer and Inner walls and the Ice Breakers. Green crab has been the top bait. Sheepshead were still around before the storm last Saturday with fish to 14 pounds caught by tog anglers. It is possible the recent drop in water temperature will run theses big porgies to the south.
Reports of rockfish in the Lewes and Rehoboth Canal are still coming in. The area around the bridges have been most productive with clam and bunker the best baits. I suspect rockfish could also be taken on plugs, jigs and flies along the marsh banks in the canal and the Broadkill River as well as under dock lights. This will be a before dawn and after dark operation.
