Boulder is a 3,882-acre reservoir located 12 miles north of Duluth, MN off County #4.

Fishing Description: 

The primary management species is walleye and the secondary management species is yellow perch.

Fishing Cover / Structure: 

Maximum depth is 18 feet with 85% of the lake shallower than 15 feet. Boulder is operated as a water storage reservoir by Minnesota Power and is subject to water level manipulation. Shoreline development on the lake is very limited.

Diversity of aquatic plants was good with 40 species or species groups identified along 40 transects. The cattail group was the most frequently found plant (80% of transects) followed by floating-leaf burreed and softstem bulrush (70% and 58% of transects, respectively).

The most common substrate types were sand, muck and boulder which were identified along 58%, 53% and 40% of the transects, respectively. Results of laboratory water analysis indicate Boulder is a slightly alkaline, moderately soft water lake with low fertility.

Boat Ramp: 

Boulder has a developed, state administered, public access located near the dam on the west tip of the north basin.
