Long Pond - Freetown is a Lake in Bristol, Massachusetts.
Do you have a question about Long Pond - Freetown, ask it here.
Long Pond is a huge, shallow, warmwater pond covering 1,721 acres; one of the largest natural ponds in Massachusetts. The pond is fed by numerous small streams and drains via Long Pond River (also known as the Snake River) into Assawompset Pond (a water supply for Taunton and New Bedford) which in turn feeds into the Nemasket River. Average depth is six feet and the maximum depth is only 10 feet. Transparency is five feet. The 11 miles of shoreline are heavily developed with year round homes. The water color is stained and aquatic vegetation is found in cove areas.
Long Pond is roughly one mile wide by four miles long, and contains three islands within its boundaries.
Long Pond is a good largemouth bass pond and a popular site for bass tournaments. Fishing is also good for white and yellow perch. Some big chain pickerel are taken occasionally, and it would not be a bad bet for bullhead angling.
There is a large paved launch ramp (Latitude: 41.7831704 N Longitude: 70.9299198 W) on the southeastern end of the pond (off Route 18) provided by the Office of Fishing and Boating Access. The parking area can accommodate approximately 40 cars. Although no horsepower restrictions are in effect on the pond, boaters are cautioned that there are numerous submerged rocks
The pond has several potentially hazardous areas for boaters. There is a sand bar that connects Nelson Island to the mainland that varies from about three feet to only inches deep, and is sometimes fully exposed in the mid to late summer. Because of the pond's shallow depth (on average around nine feet), many large rocks pose serious threats. Not all of these rocks are clearly marked, but most are.
The largest of these rocks is known as Acre Rock because of its approximate size. It is flat on its top, lies close to the surface and sits midway between the east and west shores of the pond approximately 1/4 mile north of Hemlock Point at Long Pond's southern end. Acre Rock sits approximately at the town line separating Lakeville and Freetown.
For a boater inexperienced navigating Long Pond, it is always advisable to remain on the western side of the islands when traveling north or south to avoid the many rocks and sandbars that exist. Also when passing Nelson Island going north or south, always do so in the middle of the channel between the island and shoreline, due to a string of several rocks running north and south off the island's western tip. When entering the lake's southwestern area, to the west of Hemlock Point, avoid the middle of the entrance due to several rocks that are not always marked.
Long Pond can be reached by taking Route 18 South from Route 495.
