The Loch Raven Reservoir is a man-made reservoir that provides drinking water for most of Baltimore County, Maryland. Originally built in 1881 as a dam and water tunnel to channel water to Lake Montebello and Lake Clifton, the new dam was constructed in 1914 in efforts to increase the municipal water supply. After the dam was built, the reservoir submerged the agricultural village of Warren. In 1923, the dam was elevated from 52 to 240 feet (73 m), and was viewed by many as a step towards the re-vitalization of Baltimore after the Great Fire of 1904. It is fed by the Big Gunpowder Falls river, and has a capacity of 23 billion gallons of water.

Fishing Description:

Loch Raven Reservoir has fishing for largemouth bass, smallmouth bass, bluegill, white perch, crappie, chain pickerel, walleye, catfish, yellow perch, and northern pike.

Recreational Activities:

On weekends a 3-mile stretch of Loch Raven Drive along the reservoir is shut down to vehicular traffic and is an excellent place for runners, bikers, walkers and roller-bladers looking to recreate away from the metropolitan traffic.

In addition, there are more than 20 miles of trails and fire-roads throughout the watershed that are perfect for running, hiking, horseback riding and mountain biking.

Boat Ramp:

All fishing from boats, canoes and kayaks in the Loch Raven Reservoir is allowed and regulated under the management of the Baltimore County Department of Recreation and Parks, and a current seasonal permit is required of everyone desiring to use the Reservoir.

Seasonal boat, canoe and kayak launching permits are $60.
Seasonal permit with boat docking privileges for only $125.
Winter storage is available at the center for $75.

No inflatable rafts or sailboats of any type are permitted on the reservoir.

Boat Rental:

The Loch Raven fishing center stocks a wide variety of rental boats and equipment.

Boats

* The standard rental is a 14' Jon boat with a 30 lb. thrust electric motor, one battery, oars, anchor and lifejackets. A perfect setup for trolling for the "big one". - $30

* The premium rental is a 14' Jon boat which features two swivel seats, carpet, a 50 lb. thrust electric motor, two batteries, oars, anchor and lifejackets. - $57

* Rowboat rental includes boat, oars and lifejackets. - $19

Canoes

For the more traditionalist we offer a selection of handsome canoes. Each canoe comes equipped with paddles and lifejackets. - $19

Please note: Canoes are only available for rental May 1 through October 15.

Motors and Batteries

Extra motors and batteries may be rented for any of our rental boats, but not canoes. Sorry, but we cannot rent our batteries or motors to private boats.

Standard Motor - $11
Premium Motor - $20

Each motor rental comes with one battery that is fully charged prior to rental. Each battery will give approximately two to three hours of high speed running with the standard motors.

Extra Battery - $6

Senior Special - Every Wednesday. The first 20 patrons over 62 years of age receive a FREE boat rental (motor extra).
