Fishing Tips, Tactics, How-To info: 

Stable population with good growth. Large fish are around 7 inches long.

Channel catfish
Stable population of channel catfish. Good numbers found in the lower lake during winter months. The upper lake is best in the summer months.

Strong numbers from 9-10 inches. Black and white crappie are present.

Flathead catfish Good Good size distribution; a few large fish from 20-40 pounds caught each year. Popular with ticklers/noodlers in June; try fishing shallow in September and October.

Largemouth bass
Bass continue to show good size distribution and numbers. The 2008 year class is showing very strong numbers and may bump this fishery into the excellent category in the future.

Redear sunfish
Thick, heavy growth of hydrilla during 2006-2008 has benefited the redear. Fish are present through 12 inches. Try fishing bait near the bottom around weedy areas or brush.

White bass
Numbers increasing; good spawn and recruitment during 2001, 2002, and 2008. Stocking program initiated in 2003 and continued through 2007. Locating them or their schools is key to any degree of success.

Facilities and Parks: 

Jenny Wiley State Resort Park, originally known as Dewey Lake State Park, located at Prestonsburg, Kentucky, is a mountain resort park located on the shores of Dewey Lake.

The park has several features. It lies in a "Moist Appalachian" environment, dominated by maple, pawpaw and tulip poplars. The park's hotel, May Lodge, has 49 rooms and a dining room that seats over 200.

Jenny Wiley State Resort Park hiking trails provide over ten miles of hiking for all ability levels.

This 117-site campground include utility hookups, two central service buildings with showers and rest rooms, a grocery store, and a dump station are available for your convenience. Pets are allowed if restrained. Closed for season from mid-November to mid-March.

Boat Ramp: 

Launch ramps for the boating enthusiasts and fishermen are located at the Jenny Wiley State Resort Park Marina, Goble Branch Boat Launch, Stratton Branch Boat Launch, Terry Boat Launch and German Campground.


Zebra mussels and hydrilla are present at Dewey Lake. Boaters are asked to take measures to prevent the spread of these damaging non-native invasive species by properly inspecting and disinfecting boats, trailers, and equipment.


The Kentucky record for largest tiger muskie has been caught in Dewey Lake.

Directions to Lake: 

From U.S. 23 turn East onto Route 3. After approximately 3 miles turn onto Route 3051, which merges into Route 302. Route 302 travels along the lake shore.
