Defiance Lake is a 47-acre lake located in Moraine Hills State Park in McHenry county. The lake offers excellent fishing for largemouth bass, channel catfish, northern pike, bluegills, and black crappie. There are piers to fish from on the northwest side of the lake.
The lake connects to the Fox River which also provides plenty of fishing opportunities.
With its location on the western edge of the Chicago metro, Defiance Lake offers a quick and relaxing way to leave the city behind.

Fishing Description: 

Defiance Lake has an improving largemouth bass population, with most of the larger fish over the 15 inches and over 30% greater than 18 inches.
The lake has long been known for its northern pike and most found in the lake are over 20 inches.
Black crappie continue to be plentiful with a good supply over 10 inches.
Consistent stocking of channel catfish has given the lake a great supply with some measuring over 24 inches and 5 pounds.

Fishing Tips, Tactics, How-To info: 

Fishing for all species is best in the shallow areas in the spring with it moving to the deeper areas in summer. Brush-pile fish attractors are the best place to find fish in the fall.

Recreational Activities: 

The park offers more than 10 miles of trails for hikers, skiers and cyclists, providing one of the park's main recreation features. Three trails, surfaced with crushed limestone, wind their way through the park and offer you exceptional scenic and wildlife viewing opportunities

Facilities and Parks: 

The park features two conveniently located concession stands, one at the McHenry Dam and another on the lower level of the park office, on Lake Defiance. Both provide not only refreshments, but also boat rentals, bait, and tackle.

Boat Ramp: 

There is a boat launch and dock on the north side of the lake near the office.

Boat Rental: 

Boat rental is available at the office on the north side of the lake.

Wildlife: 

For a wide spectrum of wildlife, Moraine Hills is home sweet home. Red fox, coyote, white-tailed deer, eastern cottontail, mink, opossum, and racoon inhabit the park, while more than 100 species of birds have been identified here. Great blue herons and green herons feed in the marsh areas in the summer, and the park is heavily used by migratory waterfowl, such as mallards, teal, wood ducks and Canada geese.
