Hammerhead Shark

Hammerhead Shark

Fish ID
Name:
Hammerhead Shark
Fish Habits:

Hammerhead sharks are known to eat a large range of things, including fish, other sharks, squid, octopus, and crustaceans. Stingrays are a particular favorite. They are also known to eat their own young.

Fishing Tactics:

Bait for Sharks

The shark is widely available to the sport of fishing, because its omnivorous appetite shows little discrimination for artificially rigged bait. They’ll eat anything!!! Use cut bait for sharks, in particular any oily, scented fish e.g. barracuda, mackerel, and oily chum.

Use a slab of kingfish or barracuda under a balloon or bobber & then suspend the slab of bait into the oily chum. Stagger your baits as to shallow level, mid level bait, & deep set bait.

Fishing Tackle

Heavy conventional, stiff rods. Conventional reels and big hooks. Bring a variety of hooks 5/0 to 10/0 to use depending on the size of the sharks. J hooks or Circle hooks will work just fine.

Distribution:

Hammerheads are found worldwide in warmer waters along coastlines and continental shelves. Unlike most sharks, hammerheads usually swim in schools. Some of these schools can be found near the Cocos Islands by Costa Rica.

Fish ID Help:

The nine known species range from 0.9 to 6 m (3.0 to 20 ft) long. All the species have a projection of their face on all sides of the head that gives it a resemblance to a flattened hammer.
