Spinney Mountain Reservoir is about an hour west of Colorado Springs near the town of Hartsel.

Fishing Description: 

Spinney Mountain is a Gold Medal fishery in a quiet and secluded portion of South Park. The waters of this reservoir regularly offer up trophy-sized cutthroats, browns, rainbows and northern pike. Fishing is strictly flies and lures only with size and bag limits for trout.

Fishing Tips From Users: 

"It’s a big shallow windy bowl of a lake, and it fishes best in spring and fall. You can easily fish it from shore, and spinning gear is probably a little better than fly gear. " - Anon

Facilities and Parks: 

Spinney State Park is open seasonally. The park is open, subject to change, from ice-off to ice-on. Typically this is about April 15th to November 15th annually. Park office is located at nearby Eleven Mile State Park.

Camping: 

There are no camping facilities at Spinney Mountain State Park. For camping, please visit nearby Eleven Mile State Park (http://parks.state.co.us/Parks/ElevenMile). Campsites are also available at the Chaparral General Store Campground (http://www.chaparralparkgeneralstore.com/index.html) located just outside the Spinney Mountain State Park entrance.

Boat Ramp: 

Located on both the north and south sides of the reservoir, the both ramps have docks and are available for use depending upon existing water levels. Mandatory boat inspections for aquatic nuisance species are required for all boats using the ramp each time the vessel is launched.

Boat Rental: 

The 11 Mile Marina (http://www.11milesports.com/) is available to those anglers and boaters looking for either a boat rental or guided fishing trip on either reservoir. Boat rentals and guided trips at Spinney are typically limited to the off season months only (April, May, September & October). The marina may be contacted at 719-748-0317.

Notes: 

Special Fishing Restrictions at Spinney Mountain Reservoir include:

Trophy Rainbow Trout Only artificial flies and lures are allowed. The Colorado Division of Wildlife defines “artificial flies and lures” as: “Devices made entirely of or a combination of natural or synthetic, nonedible, nonscented (regardless if scent is added during the manufacturing process or applied after) materials such as wood, plastic, silicone, rubber, epoxy, glass, hair, metal, feathers or fiber, designed to attract fish. This does not include anything defined as bait below.”

* Bait fishing and snagging are both prohibited. This restriction also applies to the South Platte River both above and below the reservoir and is strictly enforced. The Colorado Division of Wildlife defines bait as: “Hand-moldable material designed to attract fish by taste or smell. Devices with scents or smell attractants added or externally applied, regardless if added during manufacturing or after. Scented manufactured fish eggs and traditional organic baits, including but not limited to worms, grubs, crickets, leeches, minnows, dough baits, stink baits, insects, crayfish, human food, fish, fish parts or fish eggs.”

* Brown Trout SpawnerTrout bag/possession limit on the RESERVOIR is one fish, 20”or longer.

* Trout bag/possession limit on the SOUTH PLATTE RIVER ABOVE (WEST OF) THE RESERVOIR is two fish, only one of which can be 20”or longer. All trout caught on this section of the river between 12”to 20” must be immediately released back to the water.

* All trout caught on the SOUTH PLATTE RIVER BELOW (EAST OF) THE RESERVOIR AND CONTINUING TO ELEVEN MILE RESERVOIR must be immediately released back to the water. This is a Gold Medal catch and release fishing area only.

* Northern pike have no size, bag or possession limit.

* Areas closed to fishing include the fenced area directly below the dam, the Homestake Conveyance Channel and from any island or boat ramp. These areas are all posted.

* Fishing is prohibited from 1/2 hour after sunset to 1/2 hour before sunrise.

* Ice fishing is prohibited.

Directions to Lake: 

From Colorado Springs, take U.S. 24 west for 55 miles over Wilkerson Pass. Turn south on Park County Road 23 and drive 2.8 miles to County Road 59. Turn right and continue another 1.1 miles to the park entrance.
