Tips For Catching Stocked Trout

Anyone who wants to know how to trout fish needs to know how to catch stocked trout, mainly because in most areas, stocked trout are the prevalent type of trout that can be targeted. So, what exactly is a stocked trout and what makes it different from any other type of trout? A stocked trout is a trout that has been raised in an artificial environment (normally by a fish or conservation agency) for the express purpose of being released and caught by anglers. Sometimes these trout are released as "fingerlings" (two-four inches in length) and sometimes they are legal size (normally from seven to ten inches in length) and they are released into a waterway to be caught by anglers.

Because these trout have been born and raised in an artificial environment and fed by human beings for their entire existence, they tend to be much less wary than a trout that is born naturally in a body of water. This means that they are generally much easier to catch than their counterparts, native trout, which have been born and had to survive naturally in a body of water for a number of years. Native trout tend to be much more wary and difficult to entice in to biting.

In any case that is what a stocked trout is, and this is the kind of trout that I will discuss in this article as it related to how to trout fish. As you can probably imagine, stocked trout tend to eat very different things than trout that have been born naturally in a body of water. For example, native trout tend not to eat things like cheese or even Powerbait, whereas stocked trout are caught quite often with such baits. So, if you want to know how to trout fish for stocked trout, the first thing to consider is the type of trout baits that you will use.

The most popular and effective type of trout bait that can be used when fishing for trout that have been stocked is Powerbait. This manufactured trout bait, which is sold in small jars and comes in a variety of colors, is a great bait to use for our friends stocked trout. If you want to know how to trout fish with this unique trout bait, the answer lies with the term "still fishing". Still fishing (or bottom fishing) with a hook baited with Powerbait is a great course of action when you are dealing with this type of trout.

The next tip for fishing for stocked trout is to change the color of your Powerbait until you find the one that works best on a particular day. Many people, especially those who are just learning how to trout fish, make the mistake of picking a Powerbait color and using it even when they are receiving no bites. You never know what color Powerbait will work on a particular day, so experimentation is a key to success. It's a good idea to have at least three different colors available to you and to try each color for a half hour or so. If you receive no bites from hungry trout, change to a different color Powerbait for the next half hour. Once you catch a trout, start the clock again. Normally one color will outperform other colors on a particular day.

Whether you are just learning how to trout fish or having been fishing for stocked trout for a number of years, there is no doubt that these simple tips for catching stocked trout will be a welcomed addition to any trout fisherman's arsenal.
