Fishing Safely in Bear Country

in

The following guidelines will help you travel and fish safely in bear country:

Food Storage
All food, beverages, garbage, and any other odorous items must be attended at all times. They should be stored in a bear-resistant container (BRC, or "bear barrel").

Gear Storage
Keep your belongings with you: A pack or clothing left unattended invites curious bears. Not only will your belongings likely be destroyed, but the bear may also learn to associate such items with interesting smells or, even worse, food.

Be Alert
Bears are active both day and night and could be anywhere.

Backcountry Public Wilderness Cabins in Alaska

If you want to get away to a wilderness cabin, state and federal agencies in Alaska give you more than 200 opportunities. Cabins are located throughout Alaska on trails, lakes, streams, ocean shorelines and in alpine areas. These cabins are managed by different public agencies, each with its own guidelines for rental. The following list provides basic information as well as contact numbers and addresses for renting public use cabins in Alaska.

Cabins have rugged accommodations, usually a heating stove, bunks/sleeping platforms, table and chairs, and an outhouse. You are responsible for providing your own food, cookstove and cooking utensils, water, and bedding.

Fishing in Southeast Alaska

Nearly all species of salmon, trout, and saltwater fishes common to the northwestern United States and Canada are also found in northern Southeast Alaska. Tackle used to catch a particular species of fish elsewhere will catch fish in northern Southeast. The following fishing tips are general in nature. For more information on a local area, contact the local Sport Fish Division office or a local tackle shop.

Fishing Areas of Yellowstone National Park

The fishing season in the park does not ordinarily begin before July, by which time, according to one of the angling writers "the plethora of water has disappeared and the streams flow swift, clear, and cold. At this season of the year trout fishing is at its best."

YELLOWSTONE LAKE

Yellowstone Lake is one of the most beautiful lakes in the world. It and some of the tributary creeks abound with the native or redthroat trout. There appear to be no other game species in the lake. Landlocked salmon planted in 1908 and 1909 have not been seen since. The rainbow trout, planted at the same time in some of the affluents, have shown no evidence of establishment, excepting on the statement of Mr. Croley, a hotel fisherman for 12 years, to the effect that he had seen only one fish other than the blackspotted trout. This fish "looked different and had a broad side band" and was thought to be a rainbow.

Fishing at Pecos National Historical Park

FISHING OVERVIEW

The Pecos National Historical Park fishing program offers each angler approximately one mile of stream to fish alone or with up to two guests for the day. This approach is designed to offer each angler a quality experience. This section of the Pecos River is not accessible by any other park user; it is hoped each angler has a satisfying and memorable experience.

Paddlefish - Jurassic Pork

in

They've been around since plants made coal. Now they contribute to the creel. They grow like a pig, and by some accounts smoked paddlefish – the other, other white meat – is better than pork cutlets. These Jurassic survivors are living through another age, one pocked by reservoirs behind lofty dams and pollution and excessive harvest.

Catfish

"The catfish is a plenty good enough fish for anyone," said Mark Twain. Although there are four popular species of catfish in the U.S. – blue, flathead, channel, and bullhead - it is the channel catfish – Ictalurus punctatus – that is most numerous. Originally distributed east of the Rockies along the Mississippi drainage, the channel catfish is now found in every state except Alaska.

Channel catfish are the only species with spots and a deeply forked tail. The outside edge of the channel cat's anal fin is curved as opposed to the straight anal fin of the sometimes mistaken blue cat. The coloring of channels leans towards black in clear waters and yellow in muddy waters. The belly is normally whitish. Like other catfish, the channel catfish has no scales, soft fins, and three sharp, stiff, spines – one each at the front of the dorsal and pectoral fins.

Connecticut River Shad

in

American shad are seasonally native to the Connecticut River. They range from Long Island Sound to Bellows Falls, Vermont. Large numbers of shad have been counted at the dam in Holyoke, MA. Large numbers of shad pass the Holyoke dam and much smaller numbers pass the Turners Falls Dam. However, shad have trouble making it all the way through the fish ladders at the next upstream dam in Turners Falls. As a result of this bottleneck, researchers are trying to find a way to improve the fishway at that location. In the mean time, some shad are collected at the Holyoke fishlift and trucked upstream of the Vernon dam to make sure that a reasonable number of shad have access to high quality upstream habitat. The consequence is a spring recreational fishery for shad from Bellows Falls south. Nearly 4,400 anglers per year fish for shad in MA alone.

Fishing in North Cascades National Park

PLACES TO FISH
DIABLO AND GORGE LAKES
These lakes are formed by two dams and are easily accessibly by Highway 20. Glacial runoff gives these lakes their distinct emerald color and the lakes are easily explored by boat. Try the east end of Gorge Lake, near the intersection to the town of Diablo or spend the weekend at Colonial Creek Campground. A boat ramp, fish cleaning station, and fully-accessible fishing deck makes this campground a perfect place for a family of anglers.

STEHEKIN RIVER
The Stehekin River runs from the heart of the North Cascades to the head of Lake Chelan and is fed year-round by glaciers. Visitors can access the river by taking the new shuttle busses along the Stehekin Road and by a number of trails. Try casting a rod from your campsite at Harlequin Campground or the scenic Buckner Hole where the river bends near the Buckner Orchard. Rainbow and native Cutthroat Trout are popular fish species in the Stehekin River.

Fishing in Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park

The Gunnison River within Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park is designated as Gold Medal Water & Wild Trout Water. Streams and rivers in Colorado are designated as Gold Medal Waters by the state wildlife commission because they provide outstanding angling opportunities for large trout. The Gold Medal Waters begin 200 yards downstream of Crystal Dam and continue to the North Fork of the Gunnison River.

Special regulations are required to maintain gold medal quality experiences. Of the more than 9,000 miles of trout streams in Colorado, only 168 miles are designated as Gold Medal.

REGULATIONS
These regulations apply to the Gunnison River within Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park and within Curecanti National Recreation Area at East Portal (between the closure at Crystal Dam and the Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park boundary):
